The Leaving Certificate is Changing...A Lot!

The curriculums of all senior cycle subject being  reformed. In addition, two new subjects have been introduced to students starting fifth year this year in 100 pilot schools for examination in 2027:


Climate Action and Sustainable Development

Drama, Film and Theatre Studies

New subject: Drama, Film and Theatre Studies
New subject: Drama, Film and Theatre Studies

 

The first seven reformed subjects will be rolled out for this year’s fifth years:  business, biology, chemistry, physics, Arabic, Latin, and Ancient Greek.

 

The second group will be rolled out to students entering fifth year in 2026: accounting, construction studies, engineering, English, geography, physical education.

 

The third group in 2027: agricultural science, computer science, design and communications graphics, history, home economics, maths and music.

 

2028: To include: art, economics, French, Irish, German, Italian, politics and society, Spanish, technology

 

2029: To include: applied maths, classical studies, Mandarin Chinese, Polish and religious education

 

Main Changes Decided so Far


·       All reformed subjects will include project/practical work contributing a minimum of 40% to the final grade.

·       Subjects that are comprised of two terminal written papers  (English, Irish, maths) are likely to be reduced to one paper.

·       In English the 40% project work will comprise: 20% an oral task (to be completed at the end of fifth year) and 20% a creative writing task.
